The ceiling was bending and soon the dust of the rubble blotted out the sun. When Vladimir opened his eyes, he found himself trapped under the living room roof. He wiggled and squirmed his way out of the collapsed home and looked for his family. He screamed for any signs of life, but the screams fell on deft ears and there was no response.

Vladimir sat down and began to weep. A dusty hand grabbed him from behind and hugged him close. Vladimir looked up to see the familiar face of his father. His father wasn't smiling like he used to. His smile was replaced with a long stare.

The streets were congested and neighbors were running into the streets looking for loved ones.

After days of searching for his mother and siblings, Vladimir along with his father knew the worse had happened. They grabbed as many belongings as they could carry and went to the nearest church. That church took them in and helped them get back on their feet. They ate food supplied by AID organizations and slept among 1000's of other displaced families.

Vlad's dad had to find work, so he would travel into Port-au-Prince to find a job. A couple days after searching, his dad returned excited with a shovel in hand. Vlad's dad was part of the cleanup crew. His job was to clear the streets of debris.
One night as his dad returned from work, he leaned over Vlad and said this,
"Son, we must move on. I know you're sad, but mommy, brother and sister are in a better place."
"Okay, daddy, but I sure miss them."
"I know buddy, I miss them too." he said as he tucked Vlad into his cloth and cardboard bed.

The next morning, Vlad woke up and went about his chores like he did everyday since the earthquake. From sweeping the dirt ground to maning his fruit stand, Vlad was put to work. 90% of schools were destroyed and won't open for another couple months. Vlad loved the 6th grade, but he was going to have to wait for the schools to start back up.

One hot afternoon as Vlad was fanning himself, he heard his name spoken. He looked up at a figure blackened out by the bright sun. Vlad reached his hand above his head to shield his eyes. He couldn't make out the face even when he squinted hard. The figure bent down and said, "Hi, Vladimir." It was his mommy. She was alive and behind her was his brother and sister. As he looked closer, he noticed they were bandaged. In one giant leap, Vlad was in his mommy arms hugging her tight. She winced with every tug.

They packed up the basket with the fruit they had laid out on the sheet on the sidewalk. Vlad hoisted the basket on top of his head and held his mothers hand with his free hand. He led his lost family back to their new home in the church courtyard.

"This night is going to be a special night!" Vlad declared "Dad is going to be so so happy!"
"I know it will, Vlad, we missed you two very much." Mommy said.

As those words were spoken, the front of the cloth dwelling opened and Vlad's dad had returned from work. His eyes began to water and his shovel fell. He was stinky and sweaty, but that didn't stop the long embrace his parents shared.

Fly by the seat of your pants

I've been reflecting on my journey into Haiti.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

"It appears that it was a 'fly by the seat of your pants' decision." One criticizer pointed out.

To some, it was something they wish they could have done. To others, it was a mistake and not recommended. I understand you can not please everybody, but is there anybody you should be concerned with?

When I was in Bible School, I remember the director pointing out, "If you please God, does it matter who you displease?"

I agree with that statement. My whole basis on traveling into Haiti was the collection of what I knew to be right and what my wife thought. My family supported me 100%. From the mixed responses I received from friends to the criticism from strangers, my resolve to travel to Haiti was galvenized. I became more focused and excited, as if the opposition was a deterrant from all the good that could happen. In hindsight, all that opposition was smoke and mirrors and far from the truth I experienced.

This trip has not been absence of trouble or concern, but it has also been filled with hope and love for others who used to be just faces. Today, those faces have names and those names have families and dreams like any human. A lot of Haitians want to change their lives and this earthquake has given them a freedom to start over.

So yeah, my criticizer was right. The balcony is covered with debris from the earthquake. Unfamiliar materials and environment choke out this plant. Despite it's obvious difficulties, this plant has pushed forward and beaten the odds. It's reaching high and looking for the light of day. One day it will be a full grown tree. From this destruction comes life.

Here's two thoughts I had about circumstances;

Your circumstances don't define you and your circumstances don't define your future.

Where ever you find yourself today is not where you'll be tomorrow. Life happens and we change over time. Look back when you were younger, maybe you had more strength, more stamina, more dreams. In those three simple examples, I know change has crept in and affected them. How much different are you today than when you were a youth? Mabybe wiser, maybe more patient, maybe tired and not as passionate as you once were.

Thinking through what Haitians have gone through in the last couple months has really encouraged me to push forward dispite my circumstances.

Youvens Phanor, a 28 year old law student told me this, "My school is gone, but I get to start over. This earthquake has given me another chance. I want to make Haiti a better place."

We have heard hundreds of stories like this. Here's another one.

"I lost my 22 month old son and three nieces in the earthquake. God is still in control. I know he still loves me. He will take care of me" Bernadel Fanfan explained with hope in his eyes. We met him in an internet cafe sending out his resume for potential teaching jobs.

I have seen tremendous progress and faith in Haiti in the 6 weeks I have been here. The streets are being cleared, the rubble is being removed and the buildings are being rebuilt. Despite its obvious difficulties Haiti is pushing forward and will beat the odds. It's reaching high and looking for the light of day. From this destruction comes life.

Are you the roof guys?

We were approached today by a young lady looking for a teaching job. She has come from America with her teaching degree in hand. She plans on staying in Haiti to help teach in the school system. We know Pastor Claude is looking for teachers so we were able to make a connection for them. We'll see in the coming days, how this relationship progresses.

On Diquini(dee-keen-knee) street, where this New Generation School is located; The vendors and kids have watched the progress of this collapsed school with us. As Carlos and I walk the street towards the school, the chattering of these vendors and kids ask if we are the roof guys. From the hi-fives to the morning greetings, we've tried to bring everyone in on the excitement. If a shirt was to be made, it would say "local celebrity".

This morning, we met with Walley from ADRA. He is a the Carribean Director for this non-profit organization. We spent an hour discussing our story of how we ended up in Haiti and what doors have opened for this project to be completed. He was astonished with story after story of how two guys from Texas and a small army from all over the U.S. were able to help promote progress in Haiti. He encouraged us with prayer and this, "What you guys we able to do here in this short time, would have taken these guys over a year's time to complete." Yea God!

At this time, there is no other project we're looking at. We have seven more days in Haiti and hundreds of stories to sift through. There are a couple ideas I want to blog about in the coming days. Thanks for your follow and posts. I enjoy your comments and questions.

It is finished

The "Raise this Roof" project is now complete. The roof is up, the walls are built and the pillars reinforced. 15 days ago, Pastor Claude, Carlos and I sat around dreaming of a new school building. That dream has come true today. Claude explained that this new building will be multi-purpose. At night, it will work as a shelter, for people to sleep in. During the day, a school for students and a church on the weekends.

"This building is answered prayer for me and my congregation" Pastor Claude Alce explained, "We prayed that God would send us help and he has! Thanks God."

The construction of the new building has promoted progress in Haiti. Carlos and I have an appointment tomorrow morning with a high official in ADRA. It's a non-profit organization, located up the street from the school. They supply aid to needy areas. This new school will show ADRA how serious they are in rebuilding the community. Prayerfully, ADRA will supply much needed food to ASCASH as they still struggle to feed the families and kids under their care.

Again, thanks to all who made this elusive dream become reality.

There will be a opening ceremony and dedication on Sunday, March 7th.

Phase two, day five

The tin was carried down to the school today from the hardware store. A total of 141 pieces will canvas the 1750 sq ft. building. The exterior walls are receiving a layer of stucco and the braces for the roof are being constructed. We're all anticipating the end of this project. Two weeks ago the "Raise this Roof" project was discussed and planned. We're seeing the last days of this project.

We just found out that New Generation School will not be able to open until April. There is no funding for books, supplies, or teachers. These funds will be coming from the government. The families who usually pay tuition will not be able to, due of the lack of jobs available. The Haitian Department of Education will not be able to visit the school until April, thus accounting for the delay. One positive aspect is that the new school building will help expedite the process.

Thanks to all that have contributed.

"Bon Saba"

"Bon Saba"

In Creole it means, Good Sabbath. The sabbath in religious circles denotes a day of rest or a coming together of like believers. On day seven of creation, God rested. In music, the rest is interval silence. In the Psalms, Selah is used to pause and stresses the importance of the preceding passage. In the performing arts, the actor will pause to heighten the anticipation of the next line. This dramatic pause is a beat or two of silence with no dialogue and little or no music/background sound.

Yesterday was my pause, my "Bon Saba".

I sat, I listened. The 300 bricks that were purchased will make the exterior walls of the school, as well as a storage room. The concrete pillars are taking longer than expected. There was more damage to them than expected. The solution was to break a few of them down to the re-bar and build them back up. They should all be completed today.

The dump truck load of sand, cement mix and bricks are all the mediums in which a mason can create his masterpiece. The construction of the new school is a dream come true for many teachers, administrators and children. The building represents progress and the Carrefour neighborhood is buzzing with the progress of New Generation School. We heard today, that a school down the road wants to hire the workers we've employed to rebuild their school. What an great by-product of the "Raise this Roof" project. These men and women workers can now have a sense of stability knowing they can bring in income to their families for the next couple weeks.

Today was payday for many of the demolition workers. They worked hard through the heat and dust to complete the demolition in 3 days. The average worker gained $6 a day. They were ecstatic to get paid.

The carpenters, masons and cement mixers will receive pay when the roof is completed.

Phase two has begun

Demolition of phase one is complete. The jobs are becoming more specialized and fewer people are trained in these jobs. We haven't had any trouble filling these spots, due to the numerous people looking for work.

Thanks for your continual support.

Carlos explains the project's current status on this video.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3083877/Phase%20Two%20Day%20One.mov

Day Three: Demolition of Raise this Roof

A lot of energy was spent today removing the rubble. One wheel barrow broke under the constant strain of the concrete loads, but nine continued on. There is still a small portion of rubble remaining, but it will be cleared out by tomorrow. The re-bar was untied and is now completely removed. Carlos along with Pastor Claude bought lumber and supplies to make the braces for the roof.

After lunch, two crews switched over to breaking rocks and sifting sand. These materials are being prepared for our concrete. The ceiling of the building is completely down and the iron throughout the building is being untied. The school is hoping to salvage 80% of the iron to save on cost. The wheel barrows were smoking as the rocks and stones were being transported down the street to the dump site. The day went so well. The men equipped with the sledgehammers are studs! They swung those hammers all day. I picked one up to help out and I was winded after 15 secs. I conceded and gave the 50 year old man back his hammer.

I am pleased with the progress of the demolition for phase one. Equipped with our cameras and notepads we journeyed into the heart of destruction and despair. 2 million Haitians have been displaced from the earthquake and are still sleeping in tent cities. As we travel from town to town, cities of tents line the roads, parks and stadiums. As our days have progressed in Haiti, so has the relief effort. The government and non-profit organizations are doing their best to get the aid to the refugees. We see trucks handing aid out everyday. Regarding the hospitals we have visited, they are full and the lines are long. The injured are being helped as the supplies come in.

We traveled downtown to Port-au-Prince and saw hundreds of vendors selling their wares in baskets and blankets on the ground in front of their collapsed stores. The streets were littered with debris and venders. The consumers were limited and the money was elusive. Many people have items to sell, but few were buying. On our bus ride back to Carrefour, Carlos talked with a taxi driver that lost his house and car. He now is out of a job and can not find one. “I have traveled into Port-au-Prince several times since the earthquake and have returned to my family empty-handed, yet again.” The Haitian man said as he hung his head.

The education system has collapsed with the earthquake. The government has its hands full.”

Claude Alce, Carlos, and I along with local valley residents and sponsors throughout the U.S. are raising money to tear down the collapsed school building and build a one story school building in its place. This project called “Raise this Roof” will create 56 jobs. Once the school is completed, teachers, administrators and students will be able to return to school. We’re hoping to open its doors mid-March. Demolition of the collapsed building will start Sunday, February 21st.

We estimate that the entire project will cost $6500.00.

Watch these videos of the project:

Phase 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9FbXgGPG54

Phase 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tan21pb8MkA&feature=sub

As one Haitian puts it, “As the sun rises, so does the hope for Haiti”.

Do you want to help?

(c)NateManthey

Raise This Roof

Pastor Claude began New Generation school 22 years ago. Then

on January 12th at 4:53 PM, an earthquake destroyed the

school. By the grace of God, nobody was injured in the

collapse. Instead of waiting for the government to carry off the

debris, we have partnered with Pastor Claude to hire local

Haitians to demo this site and build up a tin roof.

There are no public schools in Haiti so Pastor Claude

started this private christian school for the children in the

neighborhood. He explained to us that children that can not

afford the $150 per year tuition, are eligible for a scholarship.

There are two things that Haiti needs. Education and

jobs. This project addresses both. Armed with our list of to do's we set about the day. Early in the morning, we discovered that half of Carrefour, Haiti has lost water. Down the street we found the culprit. 2 civil engineers from Norway jumped into the hole to put the water blasting pipes back together. I asked a local Haitian what happened and he responded, "This is Haiti" Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRlNQ23i4uk

We passed out cans of baby formula today at a Adventist Hospital in desperate need. The formula was welcomed with a huge smile and a thankful heart. Hundreds of babies will be able to eat, due to this donation. A huge thanks goes out to the donor in the valley.

We traveled up the street to the grocery store and found the road covered in more water. An unsuspecting driver got his truck stuck in a water covered crevasse in the road cause by the earthquake. Some bystanders helped out. Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D17E3LHlZHs

Carlos also had a special stuffed kitten given to him from a young girl named Olivia. You can read more of this story on Carlos's blog: http://web.mac.com/carlosjinks/Haiti/Blog/Entries/2010/2/15_Morning_at_the_Hospital.html

We have found a long term donor to feed the kids. His name is Merv, he is based out of California. He and his church will be feeding the 250 children for as long as it takes. As Carlos and I were discussing options for the next project, we thought about the school building. On this campus were two buildings. One two story building as well as a single story classroom. Both buildings suffered damage and will need to be torn down and rebuilt. Currently, we're putting a list together of materials needed, workers available and rate of pay for the workers. This demolition job should take 4 days with 47 workers present. This phase 1 of the project will create 47 temporary jobs and move this school closer to opening it's doors. This "New Generation" school has been in operation since 1988. The earthquake halted the school's education process and kids have not been to school for 34 days. Pastor Claude is anxious to get the school open as soon as he can. It took two hours over the mountain and through the palms. It's located on the south coast of the Haitian island. We met up with a contact and stayed with his family on the street. Their house was not destroyed, but you can see cracks running along the wall. They are waiting for the government to come and assess the house for damage.

Yesterday was the beginning of a week of mourning or prayer for the country. Local churches have seen this as an opportunity to bring common believers together to pray for the Haitian leadership and thank God for those that did survive. Local businesses and professionals will be grieving the great losses they have sustained and remember those that have passed on. It's been a month since the earthquake, but the fear of another "big one" looms over many minds. Haitians usually celebrate Carnival for 3 days before lent, but this year it has been replaced by the week of mourning or prayer.

"This will be the best year for Haiti. Through this earthquake, they will rise stronger." Wilbert Placide, a Haitian pastor, explained. "This is a great opportunity for Christians to come together and seek God's face." ASCASH the local non-profit organization located here in Carrefour, Haiti is the organization we're partnering with. Tata, the resource director for ASCASH, has successfully fed hundreds of children with donations from friends and families.

Today, over a hundred children were fed rice. There were even left-overs. The school kept their doors opened and invited more kids until all the food was gone. The full stomachs remind the children they are loved. The greatest need for children is security. The food gives them that. What a simple, yet powerful gift to give. Tata the cook for ASCASH prepared meals and organized the effort. As the children received their plates of spaghetti, their faces brightened and they said, "Thanks you!" The mounds of spaghetti bent the plates as they were being passed out. Hungry kids were able to eat. Today, more kids will eat rice provided by generous supporters like you.
Watch this video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYFxEpbFHWw&feature=sub

The bus ride back to Carrefour was filled with tension. From tourism to trade the country was establishing itself into a self sustaining economy. On January 12th, dreams were destroyed and destruction followed. Sheelove, a 22 year old entrepreneur had her own wedding planning business. Her hopes of providing for her mother and brothers now lay buried under the rubble. The clothes she wears are borrowed from a friend; the sheets she sleeps on were part of a few of the items that were pulled from her collapsed home. Her world has changed, but her drive is the same. She wants to keep giving. Today Carlos and I went to a hospital and Sheelove sang for several patients outside in makeshift tents and encouraged them. From kids to grandparents the songs lifted their spirits and showed them they were loved.

We were able to give baby formula to a mother in need as well as the hospital we visited. They will be feeding 100 kids for two days with this money. As Carlos and I visit churches, collapsed schools and walk the streets, we can see hundreds of kids around. Some have taken up a trade, like shoe polishing or picking up trash, while others are too young or unable. From my last post, I explained that a local organization here in Carrefour, Haiti called ASCASH will be feeding 150 families and 250 orphans. This organization has been running for ten years and since the earthquake has taken on a greater load. Yesterday we found out they ran out of food. Carlos and I went to a NGO (non-profit organization) called ADRA and explained the need ASCASH was dealing with. Wally, the regional director for ADRA, explained that he would work hard to get oil and a bag for rice for each family. It's great and will help. Now, the immediate concern is the 250 orphans. We talked to Tata, the Resource Director of ASCASH, and asked her what it takes to feed these children, she said $1 a day. We knew we could do that. Many of our supporters have given money for a cause just like this. Our goal tomorrow is to get the funds we're carrying into their hands to feed these kids. If you have further questions or want to participate you can call Tiffany Manthey at 956-358-9606.

ASCASH- Haitian local non-profit organization

Huge break through today! Carlos and I met with the CEO of ASCASH. He explained how he's trying to support 150 families and 250 orphans. We interviewed several families that are receiving support from them and a couple of the staff. The staff are trying to feed themselves as well as the other families. All members of this organization have lost their homes. Even though they themselves are in need, they are putting others first and supporting 450 other families. The orphans also will have a chance to attend school, which is a tremendous benefit, due to the fact that all schools cost money to attend. In light of this terrible earthquake, the orphans have a shot at education. This opportunity for them is a bright spot for their futures as well as Haiti's. They are opening the school for free to these children. From tents, food and water to school supplies, these courageous men and women involved in ASCASH are putting their necks on the line to help their fellow Haitians. I expected to see a people of greed, hatred and selfishness. My experience here in Haiti has exposed so much more to the people of Haiti. We stayed with a Haitian couple in Port-au-Prince when we first arrived. they were so willing to help their fellow Haitians out, they purchaseed water trucks themselves and distrubuted water to the local residents, approximately 7000 gallons of water were given out.

We met another Haitian named Mervolus. He is based out of California and spent some of his life in Haiti as a student and teacher. He came back to help along the street he grew up. His old school, house and church are destoryed, but the warmth of his heart and the support of his church encouraged him to fed local orphans. Together we fed 100 people. The number of orphans have tripled since the earthquake. I have not seen any kids sleeping on the streets, but I have met several families who have taken in orphans in their already cramped sheet tent.

We have heard there is not much aid in Carrefour, Haiti. Currently that's where we're based. We are trying to partner with some local aid organizations and it looks favorable. ADRA and US AID have been seen handing out rice and water to tent cities. We are discovering that the most basic needs are still the most needed, including food, water and shelter.

One Pastor said this today, "The number one need for these people are tents. The tent is the most usable item right now from shelter, security, shade and privacy. These people have some place to call home. The tent can go with them, when they decide to move back to what use to be home."

Check out my friend, Carlos Jink's blog at www.web.mac.com/carlosjinks/Haiti/welcome.html

Day Seven - Is there hope for Haiti?

We finally found a cyber cafe open in Carrefour. It appears the Haitians are getting back on their feet. Many Haitians have walked up to Carlos and I and are asking for a job, they want to translate for us. So many are looking for ways to provide for their families. As we rode on a public bus into Port-au-Price, the Haitian family members gasped at the damage of familiar buildings of their past. For many, this was their first trip back to Haiti. Silence covered the bus as we continued to see the destruction. Most people on that bus were trying to find loved ones.

Yesterday we climbed a mountain 1 hour and a half away from the tent city we've been staying in. There is a church 1200 feet above sea level nestled between the hills of the summit. It's frail wooden structure was still in tact. I asked why this building was still standing since it is so close to the epicenter. The Pastor explains that wood is more humble than concrete. It bends when it should.

Later that day, we worked with "California in Action" and helped distrubute tickets for meals to families needing a meal. The ticket works as a voucher. You have a voucher, you get food. It prevents massive chaos. It worked really well. About 100 people were fed.

As we walked through the earth shaken streets of the local neighborhood. 10 different families called out for umbrellas and tarps. They complain that they need to get out of the sun. Their make-shift homes of sheets and wood, are the only materials between them and the wheather.

Currently we're trying to team up with this church we're sleeping at. It currently houses 800 refugees. When Carlos and I arrived two days ago, they welcomed us with open arms. They have given us their best, even though they just experienced great lost. We are sleeping on the ground among them, laughing with them and learning from them. My Creole, Spanish and French skills are being developed. We still need a translator where ever we go. It's amazing how we find someone right when we need assistance.

Our first night in the tent city at the church was remarkable. A new friend of mine said, "When the earthquake happend, All I could hear was, Jesus!" He noticed how people were turing towards their faith and not away from it. At midnight as we slept on the broken concrete and dirt ground, a voice from our right began to sing in Creole. Moments later poeple from our left joined in. Soon, most of the people were singing. I couldn't understand a word of it, but it was truly uplifting for me.

Later at 3:00am a different man led the song. I don't know when they stopped, because I fell a sleep. The tent city arose with the sun at 5:00am and was ready for the day. Pots and pans began to click, the beds were being rolled up and the children all needed to bathe. Mothers directing, fathers dressing and kids playing painted a picture that appears the Haitian people haven't missed a beat. They have their loved ones close and their faith closer.

Haiti will rise again!

Day Four

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZdMyj-z_Gh0/S2GnE7DiquI/AAAAAAAAAHs/2MZsTme0-mU/s320/P1000098.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431806328599390946" />
We arrived in Haiti yesterday. We traveled on the public bus which took us from Santo Domingo, DR to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The trip took 11 hours, but well worth the trip. The temperature is between 87 high and 70 degrees for the low. We slept outside under the stars. Alot of noises ranging from farm animals to cargo planes all night. We are traveling into the interior of Port-au-Prince today. We are looking for a safe distrubution site. We're also looking forward to purchasing a pre-paid phone. I've been able to skype several family members. If you're interested in skype, look me up at "Nate Manthey".
Something I was aware of before I came was the pace of life and what I call progress.
Here in Haiti everything is slower. Or it's just the people we're with. However, Carlos and I have had to adjust greatly. We're going with the flow.

Meet some of the Haitians that have teamed up with us!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZdMyj-z_Gh0/S14k2JhFsfI/AAAAAAAAAHk/aaA--DTtmHI/s320/P1000063.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430818713341637106" />
From left to right. We were one step closer to Haiti. Our friend, Fred picked us up from the airport. It was comforting as we passed through customs and walked towards the exit to see "Nat Manly" handwritten on a piece of printer paper. We introduced ourselves and the man I've never seen embraced me like a lost long friend. It was Fred, the man I've been talking to the last couple days over the phone. He was still happy to see us, even though we were an hour late. Dominican Republic is two hours ahead of central time zone, while Haiti is only one hour ahead.

Fred hired a driver named Aimen, a police officer from Haiti, who will be with us on some of our trip. As we threw our luggage into the trunk of the car we met another fine Haitian named Vladimir Paruison, who is one of the captains of the Haitian police. Those two men will be our "secret service" as Fred puts it.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZdMyj-z_Gh0/S13Q13euvYI/AAAAAAAAAHE/DZ3OfxKxlks/s320/P1000048.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430726349523172738" />
We ate a nice breakfast of fruit, scrambled eggs and toast.
The waitress was patient as I practiced my spanish. She nodded her head like she understood everything I said. I think she was just trying to be nice.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZdMyj-z_Gh0/S13T0eqeBxI/AAAAAAAAAHM/lzMeQt_dBeY/s320/P1000059.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430729624216536850" />
As I type this, Carlos and I are sitting in a small concrete room about 7 feet across and 19 feet long. It's the dining hall for this Hotel Masion Gautreaux. Our hosts are enjoying their hotel beds and catchng up on sleep. They advised us to stay in the hotel until our doctor friend, Kerlyn Elusma arrives. She is taking a bus from Haiti to Santo Domingo and is caught up in the traffic at the border. When she arrives, we'll drive around and pick up supplies for Haiti. We hope to get to Haiti tomorrow.

Here's what we've learned so far. All these people helping us have lost relatives and their homes from the earthquake. Their families are sleeping in cars, backyards or streets. The prices on the whole island which include Haiti and Dominican Republic have raised significantly. Fred explained how most people of Haiti didn't have jobs before the earthquake. Now the streets are congested with willing hands.

As we drove to our hotel, we overheard Fred tell our driver that the hotel we were staying at was the only one left. All other hotels in Santo Domingo are filled with foreign relief organizations, media and support workers.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZdMyj-z_Gh0/S13WAMnRN9I/AAAAAAAAAHU/ROQ-Zu-ChPo/s320/P1000056.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430732024552962002" />
The Hotel Maison Gautreaux

15 hours into Dominican Republic

Day One

Last night, around 40 of our closest friends attended a dinner and presentation by Carlos Jinks and myself. It was a great night of storytelling and community as we all shared a desire to help Haiti. Several friends gave resources on the spot, while others committed to pray. I know every effort helps. I was filled with excitement and passion as I saw those around me hear the stories of opportunity we’ve experienced. A Haitian friend, named Nick Justance, thanked those in the room for helping his people. He ended his talk with a maxim from Haiti; the English translation explains it like this,
“With a lot of hands, nothing is too heavy.”

Today, we travel to the Dominican Republic (DR). We have experienced great people and are continuing to build support with our friends and acquaintances. As we taxied on the tarmac in Newark, NJ, a friend of mine called and explained that his congregation wants to send support to Haiti. He explained that the church wants to give $1000.00 to help the Haitian people. This support and these stories are why were doing what we are. We are able go to Haiti and you can be a part of the rebuilding process with us. Carlos and I are eager to find a way to get funds into Haiti via ATM’s or the banking system. We’ll keep you posted as we find out more.

We’ll land in DR at 11:50pm (Eastern Time zone) today. Our goal tomorrow is to buy supplies like crackers and water in DR and bring them into Port-au-Prince. Our nurse on the ground requested these supplies. Several friends have given to this need specifically. We expect to buy an abundance of water and crackers.

Nate Manthey

Stand up for Haiti

The world is watching one of the poorest countries trying to rebuild. The 7.0 earthquake that shook the foundations of Haiti has shook the hearts of men and women all over this globe. Social networks, celebrities and new stations are doing their part to bring awareness to the grief stricken country of Haiti. As I watched the coverage, I was stirred and I responded, much like you.

A friend,(Carlos Jinks) and I will be traveling to Haiti on Jan.24th. We'll be on the ground for 7 weeks. Our goal is to provide some media coverage to other areas affected by the earthquake and get video footage back to our contacts and raise support. Several organizations and individuals have shown interest in this trip. Some are looking for long-term projects, while others want some immediate impact. Once we're on the ground, we'll be able to accommodate specific needs.

We're still finalizing some details and contact information.
Stay connected and we'll keep you posted

If we all work together and use our gifts, we can make a difference in this world for the better!
(c)natemanthey

“Random act”

One day a special child named Johnny was walking along Market Street. He looked at the ground and noticed a quarter. He quickly bent down and put it in his pocket. He knew that the quarter would help him buy a candy bar. You see, Johnny loved candy bars. On his way to the candy store, Johnny bumped into a man that lived on the street.

The old man pulled his back straight and said, “Young man do you have any loose change?”
Johnny shook his head up and down and reached inside his pocket to pull out the quarter that he found. As the exchange was made, the old man's wrinkled face lit up. His toothless smile warmed Johnny’s heart. Johnny leaned towards the man and gave him a hug.
“What’s your name?” the old man inquired
“My name’s Johnny, pleased to meet you!”
The old man thanked Johnny again and walked away.
Thirty years have now passed.
As Johnny routinely walked down Market Street, a young woman approached him.
She asked, “Are you Johnny?”
Johnny shook his head, “Yes, Why?”
“Can I show you something?”
Johnny agreed and followed her to her car.

Moments later, they arrived to a square, brick building. Inside a large active room Johnny saw many children a lot like him. Johnny was diagnosed as being mentally handicapped when he was a young child. The woman grabbed Johnny’s hand and led him to a back room. Inside this room there was a back wall full of pictures. As Johnny approached the gallery, his eyes caught one particular portrait. His memory took him back thirty years to Market Street and the old man. Johnny turned to the young woman as she was wiping a tear away from her eye.
She looked at Johnny and said, “He was my father and he told me one day a young man named Johnny changed his life. He took the quarter that he was given and committed to change the lives of others. He opened up this clinic to help special people just like you.”

©natemanthey

Let go of control

Today as I write this blog, I'm reminded of the last 8 years I've spent here at Palm Valley Church. After High School, I moved to Texas and enrolled into a distance education program that awarded me with a certificate for ministry. I am proud to say, I have given my all and done everything in my power to do the best I can, with what I was given. I have seen friends, staff and the congregation grow numerically, spiritually and relationally.
I have seen a traditional denominational church change to non-denominational church and have observed people's response to change. We as people do not change well. We like our same parking spots, our coffee is made the same way and we drive the same routes to work. We are a habitual people who enjoy things we can control. The things we often can control bring comfort to our egos.

What if you give up your right of control and allow to be led again, like a little child?

What if we really followed what we believe to be right? What if we forsake the comforts of life and take on a nervousness and excitement of the unknown? I have no idea what the end of my life will look like. I have no idea what my obituary will say or how many kids we'll have. I don't know who will cross our paths or what terrible circumstances we'll have to face along the way, but I'm okay with that.

These statements encourage me and prod me to make an impact for Christ sake.

If you could jump ahead 10 years from now, what would you read about yourself?

The Legend of Bobby Johnson

THE LEGEND OF BOBBY JOHNSON

Johnny gazed across the glow of campfire as his father told him a story of a ten year old boy who was left alone in a forest for two days. "Bobby Johnson had a special object that he lost out here and when the forest rangers finally found him, he didn't want to leave without it. Bobby called it his treasure and he felt like he couldn't live without it".

Johnny stood up and said, "Stop Dad! You mean that Bobby's treasure is still out here in the forest?" Johnny's dad nodded as he continued the story. "Bobby grew up close to this forest, but he always vowed he would come back to find his treasure. In the end, no one knows where Bobby Johnson is.”

“What do you mean the end? The story can't end!” Johnny shouted. “What about the treasure? What about Bobby; where is he?”

Johnny's dad shook his head and said, “I don’t know. "My dad told me this story at your age and I'm sure you’ll tell your kids this story too. Let's go to bed and tomorrow we’ll go fishing after breakfast.” Johnny was really tired, but he couldn't stop thinking about Bobby's treasure. “Bobby was ten just like me,” he thought, “what was his treasure?” Johnny fell asleep thinking about Bobby and his treasure.

The next morning while breakfast was being prepared, Johnny picked up a stick and started hitting bugs off branches. He started to count as he chased bugs from one tree to another. He was consumed with getting as many bugs as he could. When he finally reached ten bugs, he turned around to go back to the campsite, but he realized he was lost. He didn't recognize this part of the forest. He looked around and began to yell to see if anyone could hear him. No one, but a distant echo answered. When he followed the echo, he stumbled upon an entrance to a cave that was hidden behind vines. He pulled down the vines and grabbed a flashlight out of his backpack. He turned it on and stepped into the darkness of the cave. As he continued deeper and deeper into the cave, he heard the sound of running water. Johnny continued his journey crawling under stalactites and leaping over huge gaps in the floor until he reached the back of the cave.

At the back of the cave was a crystal blue lake. The lake was shining. As Johnny was trying to find the source of light, he noticed something shiny on the bottom of the lake.

Could that be Bobby's lost treasure? Johnny’s curiosity drove him to put his backpack down, even though he thought of many excuses. He removed his socks and shoes and climbed up on a flat stalagmite and dove down into the lake. Johnny swam as fast as he could until he reached the bottom of the lake. It felt like it was 100 feet deep. Johnny opened his eyes under the water and thrust his hand forward to grab the shiny object trapped in the mud. Johnny pushed off the bottom of the lake with the remaining strength that he had left, and swam to the surface of the water.

Johnny gasped for air as pulled himself on to the damp floor of the cave. Johnny couldn't believe his eyes. It was a quarter. The date on the quarter said 1957 and there were initials “BJ” carved onto the back. Johnny thought, Could those initials stand for Bobby Johnson? All of a sudden Johnny heard the sound of falling rocks behind him and noticed a shadow on the wall. As his heart began to race, the shadow got closer and closer until a face of a wrinkled man was lit by the dim light. “Bobby Johnson?" Johnny asked.

"Yes, you can call me Bob," said the old man. “Can I look at that object in your hand?”

“Sure," Johnny said as he hesitantly extended his hand towards Bobby.

"This is my treasure! Thanks for getting it! You see I can't swim and when I lost it 40 years ago I couldn't go after it. That lake is too deep for me.” explained Bobby.

“How come you call that quarter a treasure?” Johnny questioned.

“My dad gave me that quarter on my seventh birthday. He said that whenever I looked at it, it would remind me of him and Mom. When I was lost in this cave for two days, I looked at that quarter all the time. It gave me hope that I would see my parents again. My mom and dad died this year and I wanted to come and get this treasure. This quarter will help me remember them forever and gives me hope to see them again one day.”

“Wow!” Johnny said, “I had no idea that quarter meant so much.”

“Thank you Johnny, that is your name right?” Bobby asked.

“Yeah, but how did you know?” Johnny asked.

“I heard a man yelling for you on the other side of the hill.”

“That's my dad!” Johnny screamed.

“Let's get out of here Johnny, I'm sure you're parents are worried about you.” Bobby said.

Bobby and Johnny made their way out of the cave and over the hill. Johnny saw his dad and ran to him. Johnny's dad thanked Bobby for finding his son. Bobby patted Johnny’s head and said, “Thanks to your son I have my treasure. I was worried I'd never get it back.” Bobby reached into his pocket and pulled out a quarter with a 1990 date.

“Keep this as a reminder of this day,” said Bobby. “One day you will realize that the most important treasures are not the things we own, but the people that enter our lives.”

(c) natemanthey

Cooperation can change the face of our world

I'm reading a great book right now called, Think Orange, it was written by Reggie Joiner.
As I was reading about it's main thought, I felt challenged about another thought.

Let's look at cooperation. History has shown hordes of men working together that have swayed countries and the minds of men sometimes for the better or worse. Martin Luther King orchestrated a march and changed the course of history forever. We can tell countless stories of groups of people that have cooperated to become highly influencial and effective.

Let's look at our own lives. What if cooperation didn't exist. Our marriages would fall apart, our kids wouldn't know the importance of education or see the benefit of working things out. Our jobs would be meaningless and our lives would end in themselves.

If cooperation didn't exist, we wouldn't have certain colors like orange and magenta. We also wouldn't have ligers or woman. Thank God for dirt and ribs.

What things can we bring together to help our world?
In, Think Orange, Reggie Joiner makes the case for church and family.

He said, "Two combined influences make a greater impact than just two influences"

"When Harvard University leveraged its influence with the power of television, the mix of entertainment and education gave us Sesame Street. When a young father decided to combine the concept of family time with the amusement park industry, the world was introduced to the phenomenon of Disney."-Reggie Joiner

Again I ask, what things can we bring together to help our world?

Every child counts

A month ago, as I was combing through new statistics and reports dealing with ministry. I found a sentence that stopped me in my tracks. I felt such a weight with this statement, it took me awhile to comprehend and address, until now.

"Current research shows that half of our kids who grow up in church will walk away from the faith, church, Jesus…"-Kurt Burner and Dr. John Trent. That statement really bothers me.
It bothered me so much our leadership team looked at our systems and asked ourselves a question provoked by Andy Stanley.

What is the problem, God has called us to solve?

Here's what our team came up with:
“Bring children to the saving knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ while showing them that God is a big God that loves them and wants them to surround themselves with Godly friends by using the Bible as a tool to make wise choices with the knowledge that the church is a safe place to be while realizing the idea that parents involved in their lives is a good thing.”

From that statement our leadership team developed a list of 5 essentials that every kid needs to know. It helped us be laser-focused.
We feel so strongly about these subjects that it is shaping our current structure.

1. GOD:
A big God that loves them. God is big enough to love the whole world and he has a purpose for every child.
John 3:16

2. FRIENDS:
Someone else who believes what they believe. The friends your children spend time with will ultimately influence the decisions they make in life.
Proverbs 27:17

3. CHURCH:
A safe place where they capture truth. Our leaders connect with your kids as mentors and friends.
Acts 9:31

4. BIBLE:
Using tools to help them make wise choices. We make sure the Bible is never boring. Each week kids walk away with one truth about God that they can remember forever.
Proverbs 4:5

5. FAMILY:
Parents who are involved in their kid’s lives and are growing together spiritually. We know that what happens at home is more important than what happens at church. So we want to equip parents with tools to build faith and character in their kids.
Proverbs 1:8

These 5 essentials are intertwined through the fibers of teachings, new lessons, skits, dramas and services.

We believe that "Every child counts". Matthew 18:14. We don't want one to slip through.
We have been commissioned to develop young people who grow in their relationship with Jesus. In their latter years, this relationship is not what their parents believed, but rather what they have experienced themselves.

That's our focus.

Create a better ending, by creating change.

Endings are better than beginnings. Where are you at today in relationships, work or education? You can still change the outcome, today! This thought really encourages me. As I look at my life, I have started seasons of my life in dysfunction or turmoil and realizing I have the opportunity to change my outcome gives me tremendous hope. It doesn't matter the cards I've been dealt or hand I'm carrying.
What matters is that the past doesn't dictate my future.

Bottom line:
The past has created what I am today, but will not carry me into the future.
The present will be painted today.

Are you in a life of addiction, abuse, or chaos? I don't take myself to be a very angry person. I guess we can ask my wife the truth. Anyways, I know I get frustrated. From driving to expecting things to work out the way I planned them, my patience gets tested all the time. And I fail. Just the other day, I was fishing with some family friends. As I was putting some of the new equipment together I just bought online, I noticed it didn't work the way it should have. I spent enough time on it to frustrate me. You could see the peak of frustration as parts were flying through the air onto the ground. The friends of mine stepped back and were silent. It was now awkward, but my frustration clouded every bit of judgement I had. I didn't know they were scared. They told me later that day and I hung my head in shame and ask for forgiveness.

In the moment, all that mattered was an action of anger.

I didn't think of the ramifications or of those around me. I was messing up the whole fishing trip.

So, today in church. A message to convict this wicked heart and renew a clouded mind.

Love is not easily angered. A sentence like that drives the point home pretty clear, but wait there's more. Proverbs 29:11, Proverbs 14:9, and Ephesians 4:26-27. All these scriptures describe ways to handle anger. I needed handles. I wouldn't have been a spectacle that scared my friends that day.

How about you? Are you easily angered? Are there ways you could act differently?

Does leadership and discipline compliment each other?

In my limited experience, I'm learning a huge lesson about leadership. You can't grow as a leader without discipline. The essence of a leader is leading something. Be it, a CEO of a fortune 500 company or a single mom leading the charge of three kids with three different school activities. I have seen many forms of leaders. A common thread that sticks out is their discipline. The CEO that handles budgets to personnel to the mom that handles sandwiches and mapping out the fastest route to little Jimmy's tee ball practice. These individuals must have discipline in their life to make it work. Notice I didn't say, they have to have discipline in their life to keep it from going crazy. Craziness happens, but discipline helps.

Here are a couple handles that I am learning with discipline:
The road to life is a discipline life; ignore correction and you're lost for good-Proverbs 10:1
Life is tons of discipline - Robert Frost
I don't like it at times, but I love what it produces- Rick Gannon

igrow, do you?

Several years ago, I was faced with a challenging question? I've never asked myself this question before and don't remember my response at the time it was asked. All I remember is how I felt.
I remember my friends sitting across the table waiting for my response. It seemed as though the room was caving in on me and I was losing every angle to escape.

They asked me if I had a personal growth plan.

I was speechless. I was confused. I was searching my brain for every intelligent answer and I had nothing.

The next thing I knew, the conversation was rapidly getting more uncomfortable. I began writing down every word and thought. I ended up with 3 pages full of why personal growth was necessary in my life.

Today, I can say, personal growth has become a habit in my life as well as a requirement of those I work with.

Here's some of those thoughts.
Personal growth keeps you relevant.
If you don't grow for the future, the past will dictate your direction.
You don't grow healthy automatically, you grow healthy intentionaly.
You can't give others what you don't have.
Life begets life; complacency begets complacency.

These are constant reminders for myself. I don't want to grow irrelevant, because most eventually do.

Discovering a title

What is it about titles?
Titles denote recognition and entitlement. A college graduate green with knowledge and passion will eventually find themselves working for the title. Many people and things may be sacrificed along the way, but the title was obained and nothing else seems to matter.
What about titles in general?
Titles make you feel certain ways about cleaning products and how comfortable you feel in those new jeans. Has our culture created a "title-centric" mentality?

Take this blog for instance, I had a hard time thinking of a title for this blog. I wanted a catchy title. A title that would capitvate all the rantings and ravings of a young man, trying to figure out life.
I called my wife and received tons of ideas, but none of them seem to hit the bullseye.

Here are some of the ideas:
Nate's nuggets...too cheesy
insights
nateology...too classroom-ish
pop-up...reminds me of pop caps
northern lights
essentials
affirmations

What are your thoughts on this matter?!
